Malawi Agriculture Project
Malawi has the ideal climate and soil for growing crops and raising livestock. However, each year, endemic drought also creates conditions for famine. The Mennonite Brethren Church of Malawi (MBCM) has a unique and timely opportunity to help build self-sufficiency and sustainability in their communities. Through collaboration and the implementation of the simple yet strategic techniques of a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model, the MBCM can become a vehicle for Kingdom relief and blessing in this nation and beyond.
This project involves three initiatives:
Bananas for Life
Establish five banana community gardens for local consumption and sale; form two co-operatives for shared resources; train 100+ farmers in sustainable banana cultivation, irrigation, and post-harvest handling.
Community Livestock Initiative
Facilitate community production of goats, rabbits, and guinea pigs for local consumption and sale; form two livestock farmer co-operatives for collective breeding, feeding, and marketing; train 150 farmers in animal husbandry.
Empowering Children & Families
Train children in animal husbandry through practical learning opportunities (such a Sunday School) and hands-on projects; enable children and families to earn income, pay school fees, and improve household nutrition.
