Sub-Saharan Africa

Multiply is involved in various parts of Sub-Saharan Africa for the purpose of community transformation among the least reached.

In Eastern DR Congo, there is an emphasis on working with existing churches to do leadership development, discipleship of young adults, and community development projects. In Burundi, our teams are championing social and spiritual resourcing for the marginalized and oppressed, such as the Batwa Pygmy people group. In the refugee camps of Malawi, the church is expanding at an astounding rate, despite reeling with an influx of asylum seekers from Mozambique, Somalia and other regions, and crippled by water shortages, dwindling food rations and disease.

There has been a missionary presence in  Sub-Saharan Africa since the early 1900s and, despite seasons of unrest and violence, the church there continues to thrive, with more than 85,000 believers in over 650 congregational gatherings. Yet many of these churches live with a dependency-based mindset, having experienced years of endemic poverty, political turmoil and rapid population growth. There is a serious lack of mature disciples who can lead.

To keep pace with church growth, Multiply is offering bursaries and scholarships to Bible School students, and resourcing multiple training seminars in leadership development. Our national leader in Sub-Saharan Africa is Nzuzi Mukawa. Nzuzi and Multiply’s Doug Hiebert have worked closely in developing and delivering training materials and modules for pastors, creating a ten-module course on Bible, doctrine, mission and leadership that is focused on equipping ministry leaders who haven’t received any biblical, theological or missiological training. Their goal is to offer this training in the capital of each of Congo’s 24 provinces by 2025.

Our Sub-Saharan African teams are working to see their nations transformed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the equipping and multiplication of missional leaders and the planting of missional churches.
